Those of us who suffer from anxiety know just how debilitating it can be, and there are a lot of us.

In fact, anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness in the United States, with about 18% of the population aged 18 and older suffering from some form of anxiety disorder. That's almost one in every five people.

Anxiety can largely be described as your mind turning against itself. It's emotional turmoil that sits inside of you, bringing bouts of nervousness and rumination. It is the feeling of dread, the fear of what's to come or what will be.

What's arguably the worst part about anxiety is that this emotional turmoil is often completely subjective, meaning it's all just an extreme reaction to situations that are only as bad as we perceive them to be.

In extreme cases, it can cause tightness in the muscles, fatigue and problems focusing. All of which are symptoms of a variety of conditions; and this only further exacerbates the problem.

Our different personalities lend to how much anxiety each person has. For example, a person who is Type A and needs to plan everything out might have more anxiety than someone who never plans anything, choosing instead to simply go with whatever feels right in the moment.

In most cases, people will have a "normal" amount of anxiety.

This anxiety stems from everyday concerns like making enough money to support yourself, how healthy you are, and whether or not you want a partner, just to name a few on a long list of things that people like to worry about.
