Every Map You’ve Ever Seen Has Been A Lie

We’re used to seeing maps from the time we’re very young people. The map we’ve always looked at is called the Mercator projection map.

Mercator maps tend to exaggerate the size of things around the equator so they can take a round object and make it into a flat, rectangular picture. But it leads us to an incorrect idea of what the world actually looks like.

The map is unbelievably wrong.

But that doesn’t mean the Mercator map is totally useless. It preserves true compass bearings between any two points and is standard in nautical navigation. Check out some of the ways it gets our world wrong in the awesome video below!
