Despite getting colder outside, the Holiday season feels warm as we get together with our loved ones to share a meal, connect with relatives we haven’t seen in a while and finally get time off work to have energy for each other. However, for some, the holidays are nothing but a reminder of their solitude.

Some people, especially as they get older, find that they have no one left to share this special time with. Some of us find ourselves in new countries, or spouses pass away, and children grow up and move out. Whatever the circumstances, they all lead back to the same result: being alone on Christmas.

This older lady, however, was really hoping that this year would be different. So she made an ad on Craigslist that has since gone viral, offering services as a grandmother for Christmas.

“Anybody Need A Grandma For Christmas?”

The grandma wrote a vulnerable and honest post detailing exactly what she would offer and why she was making the ads. She starts the post by listing all that she can bring: “I have nobody and would really like to be part of a family. I cook, and I can cook dinner, I’ll even bring food & gifts for the kids! “

In the second part of the ad, her raw emotions show. She writes all in capital letters: “I have nobody and it really hurts! Let me be part of your family.” After all, the holidays are all about family and even if a person is used to being alone, seeing it all around them makes it difficult.

Someone Saw The Ad

Craigslist is browsed by thousands of users every day. According to a study from March 2022, Craigslist receives 250.6 million visits every month. Each visitor spends about 14 minutes exploring the website. That means someone was bound to find the grandma’s ad.

Eventually, a man named Carson Carlock found the ad and thought it was heartbreaking. He knew that he must do something about it. He explains: “I go through the free part of Craigslist pretty often, just looking for stuff, because sometimes people give away stuff for free. I saw that post, and I was like, you know that’s really sad.”

Knowing the impact that we all have on one another, and understanding its domino effect, he decided to do something about it.

Grandma Was Receiving Hateful Messages

As it turns out, Carson wasn’t the only one to have noticed the ad. Many came across it and started sending her hateful messages. This broke Carson’s heart for her even more. He explains: “I understand that everybody can be wary about it because there’s a lot of bad things happening in the world right now.”

He decided to reply to the post ad and share it, hoping to rewrite the narrative and turn the ad into a positive experience. He wrote: “someone, please let her be your grandma for Christmas.” However, this wasn’t enough, and the grandma had to take down to post to avoid all the hate.

Carson Tried Reaching Out

Once Carson noticed that the ad had been taken down, he decided to reach out to the woman who made it directly. He updated all those waiting for an update, writing: “I will post the only email I have for her, which is the Craigslist email that was listed on the post, I’m not sure if it still sends emails to her actual email anymore, but it is worth a shot.”

Not long after, Carson did receive a response from “Grandma.” She turned out to be a woman in her mid-50s, currently battling cancer, who goes by the name “Carrie.” Carrie didn’t have a family, as she was estranged from her only daughter and forbidden from meeting her granddaughter.

Grandma Was Having Second Thoughts

At this point, Carrie started to receive invitations from families to join them for Christmas but her glimmer of hope had been wiped out by all the hateful messages she had received first. She likely felt embarrassed.

She started having second thoughts about her request and didn’t accept the invitations that she received. Despite being sick and alone, she was weighed down by the negativity people showed her on the internet.

Carson’s Mother Was Also Alone On Christmas

Carson could empathize with Carrie as his own mother was also on her last Christmas. He felt that no one deserved to be alone during that time.

Unfortunately, being alone on Christmas is quite common in the elderly community. Many of them stay locked in their apartment or retirement homes like they would any other day without visitors who are willing to make the trip to see them. It’s like they’re considered already dead simply because they’ve reached a certain age.

A Happy Ending

Luckily, Carrie’s ad experience did have a happy ending after all. Carrie wasn’t alone for Christmas as she chose to spend it with friends. Although she didn’t get a family to share it with after all, she formed new friendships out of the whole ordeal.

Carrie and Carson Carlock met in person at a local McDonald’s. According to The New York Times, Carrie hugged Carson closely, and the duo shared a heartwarming moment that broke them both into tears. Carrie also started a movement where many reached out to her to relate and explain that they also have felt lonely and longed for family.

The Spirit Of Christmas

Moving forward, Carrie hopes that she and Carson can team up and help out some of those lonely on Christmas. Knowing that pain firsthand, they hope to take it away from as many people as they can.

This is a reminder for the rest of us to be mindful of our interactions during the holiday season. An extended invite for a distant relative, an extra plate of food for a neighbor, or a small gift for a coworker could fill part of the pain of their solitude. There are many who long to hear a human voice on Christmas but instead will have to do with the sound of the television at best.

Carrie explains that at the end of the day, we all simply long to love and belong. Giving that opportunity and compassion to someone is the true spirit of Christmas.
