Shahid Davis Had Just Bought Some Food

He used the Chipotle app to order dinner to his house but realized too late that he forgot to update the delivery address. The last time he placed an order using the app, he’d been staying in a hotel in Iowa, but had since returned to his hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland (a roughly 1000-mile distance away).

He tried contacting customer service, but they told him it was too late to cancel as the delivery driver had already picked up his order.

There Was Nothing He Could Do

Rather than simply ignoring it, Davis decided to at least do something nice with what he’d been dealt despite any frustration.

When the driver texted him saying he’d arrived at his Iowa destination, Davis responded, “Take it with you bro and enjoy the lunch. I forgot to change my address and I [sic] currently in Maryland.”

He Got A Normal Response At First

“Umm…Ok thhanks [sic].”

Davis assumed that would be the end of it, even writing in his original post that he was “mad at first” about the inconvenience and having to lose some money on some food he couldn’t eat.

However, he soon received another message from the driver that would change his whole perspective.

He Made His Driver’s Day

“I wanted to thank you again,” the second text began, “It’s my brother’s birthday today and he is laid to rest not far from where you had me take this delivery.

I’m having lunch with him today because of you. You have no idea how much that means to me. I truly appreciate it.”

Davis Was Stunned

He posted the interaction online, and it subsequently went viral, having been shared over 100,000 times over his Facebook story alone.

People were astounded by the impact that such a short conversation—along with a simple gift—could have. It was even more incredible considering the extremely slim odds of Davis being paired with this driver specifically. Everything fell into place.

His Mistake Allowed For A Beautiful Moment To Happen

Davis spoke to Upworthy about the experience, telling them he felt really happy to receive the message.

“[I] felt like I made an impact in his life even though I don’t know the person’s name or anything about them. But it doesn’t matter at the end because I did something to help brighten his day up!”

He Believes We All Have The Capacity For Kindness

“I think we humans all have a kind soul inside, we just have to push out the negativity and push out kindness,” he explained, “Only we can make the world a better place.”

Comments on his post agreed as many celebrated the incredible moment. “Just proves that you never know what someone is dealing with and how a kind gesture may impact their life,” wrote one user after calling what happened “simply amazing.”

Everything Happens For A Reason

We’re all on a path with no knowledge of what will happen along the way. Even the smallest of interactions can be seen as pre-determined, or, at the very least, all having meaning in a person’s life.

This encounter embodies that philosophy perfectly. Though neither Shahid nor the delivery driver knew each other, especially seeing as they lived states apart, they still had a chance meeting that led to something beautiful.

And who knows? The universe does like to reward those who practice love and kindness, so maybe Shahid will soon see that he will receive a gift in kind. He’s certainly earned it.
