Nostradamus is a French astrologer and self-proclaimed seer who lived in the 1500s. During his time, he wrote a book called Les Prophéties, or 'The Prophecies', which contained 942 poetic quatrains that he said were predictions of future events.

He had (and still has) swaths of followers who believed his word to be truthful, who believed that all his predictions were accurate and would come to pass.

When December rolls around, we check on Nostradamus' predictions to see what might happen over the next 12 months.

Though his writings can seem a little vague, artistic, or abstract, these world events are what people have gleaned from his writings about the year 2023—and could serve as a potential heads-up for what's to come.

A Great War

Among the biggest of Nostradamus' predictions is that of a 'great war.' Specifically, he wrote, "Seven months great war, people dead through evil."

People have already begun tying this prediction to the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Though the prediction seems dire, people are finding one silver lining within it.

Seven months is rather short when it comes to wars, meaning if one should break out, it will be on the smaller scale and likely not involve nuclear weaponry like many fear.

The Future Of Mars

Nostradamus also had something to say about the planet Mars, writing that "the light of Mars will go out."

Some believe this may have to do with Elon Musk and his famous desire to colonize Mars by the end of the decade. This prediction tells us that will not come to pass and his wishes will be squashed.

Others have attributed it to the previous war prediction, believing Nostradamus used 'Mars' in reference to the Roman god Mars, who oversaw war and combat. His light going out could reference an end to wartimes as well.

It seems that the economy will only get worse before it gets any better, according to both Nostradamus' predictions and current experts in the field.

Though, the French prophet says the outcome of rising prices will be much scarier than people needing a tighter budget. "So high will the bushel of wheat rise that man will be eating his fellow man," he wrote.

Global warming has only become a more pressing issue as the years go on, and Nostradamus doesn't see that improving any time soon.

He envisioned some pretty extreme conditions, having written, "For forty years the rainbow will not be seen. For forty years it will be seen every day. The dry earth will grow more parched, and there will be great floods when it is seen."

Divine Fire

One of the more surreal predictions he wrote down was one alluding to a "celestial fire on the Royal edifice."

This could mean a fire to a Royal building of sorts—namely in Europe where he grew up—or it could be a much larger sentence referring to the Earth itself. The word 'celestial' has scary connotations as well, as it could allude to what's modernly known as a solar flare.

The political landscape has been rocky at best over the past few years, with citizens across the world standing up against government bodies, advocating for what they believe in. Nostradamus saw that that would continue into 2023. "The trumpet shakes with great discord. An agreement broken: lifting the face to heaven: the bloody mouth will swim with blood; the face anointed with milk and honey lies on the ground."

One of his more poetically written refrains, people have begun attributing this prediction to class division. In particular, believing a revolt against the wealthy will take place.

A rough one, too, if Nostradamus' predictions prove true. There are those who pay great heed to his writings, considering them true prophetic visions that are now almost half a millennia-old, while others brush them off as nothing but nonsense, given the lack of concrete evidence.

They're still spine-chilling to read through, even if you have little trust in them.

You're allowed to put your faith into whatever outlet helps you. No matter if you choose to follow Nostradamus' predictions, someone else's set of guesses, or not look at anyone's vision of the future and instead wait to see it for yourself, there's no wrong answer.

Just as long as you don't let it get to your head too much.
