5 Ways To Stop Yourself From Overthinking Everything

1. Meditate.

Meditation is my first go-to when I'm overthinking things. Interest in meditation has been in steep increase and for good reason.

Studies have found that meditation is more resting than sleeping and that people who meditate instead of napping during the day are actually sharper. When better rested, I know for a fact I'm much more focused and less scatterbrained.

2. Live in the present.

My biggest problem with overthinking is the fact that I tend to look too far down the road.

I overthink the future like crazy. So I take a few deep breaths, examine the moment that I'm existing in, and it helps me feel a little more calm.

3. Focus on the positive.

Overthinking tends to lead me down a path of negativity. When negative thinking prevails, I'm shifted away from what makes me happy.

So when I find myself feeling shackled by an overactive mind, I remember the good things happening in my life, like my friends and family. We all have much to be thankful for.

4. Exercise.

Doing something physical, even just going for a walk, paying with a pet, or doing some yoga can help you clear your mind.

Exercise requires you to focus on something else instead of what you're overthinking, thus pulling you out of your obsessive thinking patterns. Exercise, of course, is a requirement for a long, healthy life too.

5. Spend time in nature.

When all else fails, I go out and spend time in the forest. I'm lucky enough to live in a rainy, forested area.

Getting caught in a rain shower is like showing away all the anxiety that comes with overthinking. It really is like pushing a reset button.
