Staying Positive

7 Ways To Stay Positive In A Negative World

It can be hard sometimes to stomach the cruelty and negativity that we see every day in our world. Turn on the news and you'll hear about bombs killing the innocent.

Go outside and you'll see homeless people hungry on the streets. Open the newspaper and you'll hear about violence in your community. So what can you do to be a beacon of light in a negative world?

1. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you.

Make sure your friends are people who bring out the absolute best in you, not people who drag you down. You have to vibrate at a higher frequency, and that won't happen if you're with people who keep you feeling bummed.

2. Limit exposure to negative media.

It's a blessing and a curse, the media is. It's important because it helps you keep cued into what's happening in this world, but you can also limit the negativity you see. Gory movies, shows about murder, and violent video games are seriously negative things you should avoid.

3. Create new, positive habits.

Positive change in the world starts with you. If you have a temper, learn to temper your temper. If you do bad things, try to replace them with better things. Don't work to break old habits, but make new, better habits.

4. Laugh more often.

It feels good and it's absolutely infectious.

5. Give a hug once in a while.

Studies have shown just how important hugs can be for this world. Not only do they feel good, but they're good for your immune system as well.

"We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety," said Sheldon Cohen, professor of Psychology at CMU's Dietrich College of Humanities And Social Sciences.

"We tested whether perceptions of social support are equally effective in protecting us from stress-induced susceptibility to infection and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feelings of support and themselves protect a person against infection."

6. Disconnect from time to time.

Be sure to take a little time and disconnect. Shut down and go for a long bike ride. Take off to the beach for the weekend. Spend a week backpacking through the forest. Just get out of it all once in a while. Let nature recharge your batteries.

7. Take action.

The final step here is to take action and begin improving the lives of people around you. If people live good lives, the allure of living in a negative way is suddenly gone. And remember, everyone does better when everyone does better.

Just A Matter Of Minutes

Perhaps the most interesting factor in life is that all it takes for a drastic life change is just a moment. This can be good or bad. In a moment you can lose everything, say the wrong thing, or trip and fall into a lifetime injury. But at the same time, our whole identity is created in moments, such as the moment of your first kiss, the last time you see someone you loved, or the moment you hold your newborn baby for the first time.

This set of twins was born within just minutes of each other. However despite being twins they were born on different days, different months, and even different years.

Did The Hospital Make A Mistake?

Now it's easy to wonder: "how could this even happen?" Maybe in the heat of the moment, a staff member accidentally wrote the wrong date on the birth certificate or the system made an error.

But the situation was much simpler. What happened was that parents Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo of Greenfield welcomed a son named Alfredo into the world on New Year’s Eve at 11:45 p.m, their local time. Now that part makes sense. What makes this story interesting is that exactly fifteen minutes later, another baby pushed out and the couple welcomed Alfredo’s twin sister Aylin. This put the time of her birth to be on New Year’s Day, a whole day, month, and year ahead of her brother's. Now he can always claim to be the oldest and no one can argue against it.

Thankfully both babies came out healthy, despite the complications that the birth of twins can sometimes face. Aylin was welcomed into the world at 5 lbs., 14 oz., while her big brother, Alfredo weighed 6 lbs., 1 oz. Even their parents were amazed that their children now had different years on their birth certificates. The mother explained: "It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays."

Although this might not be the first time this happens, twins with different birthdays are rare, and the chance of twins being born in different years is about one in 2 million. These babies defied the odds from the moment they came into the world, now they can take that with them for the rest of their lives.

Dr. Ana Abril Arias, who oversaw the delivery said that it was certainly one of the most memorable deliveries of their career. It's interesting thinking about how the twins will lead their lives after they've made such a remarkable entrance.

Twins often feel like they are in competition with one another, in an attempt to build their own identity and feel unique. Now they can have birthday parties a day apart and really feel like, despite their connection as twins, they're both still unique individuals.

Twins Make For Only 3% Of American Births

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are typically 120,000 twin births every year in the United States. The births make up just over 3 percent of all births, however, which is a considerably small percentage. Their uniqueness allows them to tap into abilities that help them form really strong bonds. They sometimes can even tap into abilities that the average person can't access. For instance, 40% of twins invent their own languages, some even say that they can almost read each other's minds. This could be due to the fact that twins start interacting in the womb at 14 weeks.

However, they also hold their differences. In fact, Identical twins have different fingerprints and twins can even have completely different skin tones.

Stranger Things Can Happen

The year is just beginning and yet newborn babies made headlines within seconds of coming into this world. It puts into perspective how quickly someone's existence can make an impact, and how simple that impact can be. This year, ask yourself how you can make your mark, and watch its ripple effects.
