Manifestation is a principle that has existed for ages, even before there were words for it. We attract what we think of, so we ought to be thinking of good things. This has been broken down into numerous other techniques and more specific ideologies, but none are perhaps more popular than that of the Law of Attraction.

But where did the Law of Attraction originate? Does its history have any influence over the way we see (and maybe even use) it today? Can it even still be used today? Let's find out.

If you've given any thought to manifesting before, it's likely that you've heard of the Law of Attraction. At its core, it's a philosophy that believes your thoughts have tangible effects on your life and that negative or positive thoughts alone can have influence over your life's path.

How did this law come to be, though? Who introduced it, how did it rise to popularity, and is it something that's still applicable today?

Most people attribute the Law of Attraction to new-age beliefs, especially with the rise of books like The Secret rising to popularity by repackaging the same philosophies. The Law of Attraction has a much longer history behind it, though, more so than people may think.

The phrase itself first appeared in a book from 1877. Russian mystic and co-founder of the Theosophical Society, Helena Blavatsky, was seemingly the first person to jot down the concept of the Law of Attraction, initially explaining it in the context of attracting the powers of spirits.

However, this first writing didn't introduce the Law of Attraction to the world, nor was it used in the way we know it today. That credit goes to William Walker Atkinson in his book Thinking Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World, written in 1907.

The book was well-received by audiences and influenced many to adopt this positive thinking to positive life connection. Over the next few years, this idea would only grow in popularity, being covered by many other authors who expanded upon the idea.

It only continued to grow, with Atkinson's philosophy not changing much since he penned it. He believed strongly that the Law of Attraction was about attracting your wishes to you with positive thinking and meditation upon that wish.

All the way up to The Secret, which once again popularized the idea of the Law of Attraction within modern audiences. Now, suddenly, everyone was back on the manifestation train as it was explained to them more digestibly than books from the early 1900s.
