Woman Found Out She’s Actually Been Officially Reported “Missing” Since 1980
When binging the latest true crime documentary on Netflix, we tend to separate ourselves from it. Then every once in a while, someone comes out on social media to share a vulnerable experience that sounds just like the plot of a crime documentary. One woman in particular recently found out she was kidnapped and has been missing since the 1980s. Here is her story.

Finding Out The Truth
Shawne Bolton was just 10 years old when she found out that her parents weren't really her parents. In the midst of their divorce, they told their daughter that she was actually adopted. Shawne had a hard time understanding that the people that she was living with weren't even related to her, especially given the way that they often mistreated her.
However, it wasn't until she was a full adult that she decided that it was time to figure out who her biological mom really was. She decided to contact the sheriff in her police department to find more information.
"I assumed the fastest way to track my biological mother down would be to seek a criminal record for her. I don't know what compelled me to call the sheriff's department in the city where I was born." This call would reveal information that would change her life forever.
The Sheriff's Curiosity Was Sparked
When the sheriff received the call he got to work looking to see if the mother had a criminal record. But what he found instead was completely unexpected. The sheriff was immediately intrigued and started to dig deeper to figure out who this actual birth mother was.
Shawne remembers thinking: "[The sherrif] became extremely interested in who I was." He finally came back with some updates. Shawne explains: "after a few minutes of having a conversation about who I was, he asked me to please sit down and that he had something to tell me."
She adds: "I sat down, he told me he couldn't find any information on my mother, but that I was a missing person," she shared. This was the moment that Shawne found that she had been reported "missing" by her biological grandmother in 1980.
A Cold Case Investigation
Just like that a cold case that had been closed for decades was re-opened. While the sheriff couldn't find information about the biological mother, he found the record for the missing person from the 1980s.
The report was filed a few months after Shawne was born in November of 1979. It stated that the missing person was actually kidnapped. "I was a missing person, I had been since 1980. There was a police investigation I could not access because the records had been archived, but I had been kidnapped," explains Shawne.
A Life Changing Revelation
Shawne wanted to know more, but she wasn't able to access the investigation report. So, she decided to reach out to the world of social media and tell her story there instead. She recorded herself in a video titled: "How I learned I had been kidnapped."
The video quickly went viral on Tiktyok, reaching 3.3 million people. In it, Shawne explained the reason why she decided to go on this investigation in the first place: "This is how I found out I was kidnapped. I was 26 years old. I was in a happy place for the first time in my life and I was preparing to get married and have two young children." Now at 42, she's finally getting answers.
A Heartbreaking Exchange
You would think that if a mother gives up on her child, she is doing it in the best interest of the child but this wasn't the case for Shawne. In another video, she revealed that her biological mother was going through her own battles at the time and had actually "sold" her to another couple.
The biological mother must not have told anyone about the exchange so when the grandmother found out she panicked. She had no idea what had happened to her granddaughter so she filed the missing person report. When the biological mother was interviewed for the report, she had indicated that the adoptive father was the suspect, but strangely the investigation didn’t reach any conclusions.
A Rough Upbringing
Shawne surely didn't get the answer she was hoping for when she wet searching for her biological mother. In fact, Shawne's whole upbringing was full of tragedies. Her adoptive parents didn't treat her well throughout her life.
It was heartbreaking for her to find out that her biological family had also abandoned her. No one could find out why she was missing for two decades, not even the federal and state investigators. The relationship with her new biological family was also awkward because they built up a person of her over the years. Her grandma had even e bought her presents every year on Christmas. However, she was not like how they had imagined.
Clues And Answers
Thanks to her Tiktok video, shared above, Shawne was able to tie up loose ends and reach a lot of answers on her past. For most of her life, she had wondered who her biological family was and why they had not tried to look for her.
"I essentially have two families, my biological family, and the family who kidnapped me", she explains. Shawne was even able to find her protective mother with the help of a private investigator. Sadly her mom did not apologize for what she put her through and feels like the victim in the situation according to Shawne.

We can't choose the family we are born into. Luckily we can spend the rest of our lives choosing the people we surround ourselves with carefully, and creating our own chosen family. Shawne story actually had a happy ending. She may not have found the kind of mother she dreamed of but the TikTok community helped her find her biological father. Thanks to a DNA test they met up and got along well, which Shawne is very excited about. She has also created her own family with her husband and two children.
