It’s usually safe to bet that people act a certain way for a reason. When they’re super close-minded, it’s often an act of self-defense. it’s like they’re trying to spare themselves the stress of handling the truth. In therapy, they call this resistance, it’s a form of projection where the close minded person becasically shoots the messenger for delivering them facts that scare them either because they don’t understand them or because they make them see what they don’t want to.

If you meet a really close minded person, don’t be offended. There’s no point spelling out to them that they can’t handle the truth as this will only make them more defensive. Instead reasess and try out these strategies instead, despite many arguing against them.

Stop Sharing Personal Information

This may be the easiest technique on this list. Basically, the best way to avoid dealing with a narrow-minded person is not to engage in the first place. Don’t bother sharing personal information with someone who is just going to criticize it. Otherwise, you’re just providing them with ammo that’s going to trigger their judgment and resistance, and you’ll wear yourself out trying to prove your stance.

Instead, be the bigger person, and deflect their behavior by smiling, walking away, and shrugging it off. Don’t waste your energy.

Accept Defeat

You have two options here. You can either work tirelessly trying to convince a close-minded person of something that they’re not open to receiving, or you can accept defeat and that you won’t be able to single-handedly change their minds. The problem has nothing to do with you.

For someone to accept a new truth, they need to have the will and the space to receive it. Close-minded people are stuck in a feedback loop that reinforces their beliefs only and makes them too stubborn to see beyond it. The only way for that to change is for them to find a reason to be willing to.

Become A Broken Record

If a close-minded person is resorting to aggressive or condescending methods then you’ll need to use the assertiveness technique called, “the broken record.” As the name suggests, this technique means that you should repeat the facts that they refuse to acknowledge over and over again until they walk away. Stand your ground and refuse to be intimidated.

While you can’t shove your stance down their throw, this technique is only meant to get them to hear what you have to say so if they walk away with nothing else, they at least know what is on the other side.

Understand Their Defence

Close-minded tend to see the world through fear and anxiety. Understand that they don’t mean to simply disagree and argue with you. It’s almost like a physical response because they’re too afraid to acknowledge your perspective. They tend not to be optimists yet they prefer to live in blissful ignorance than accept harsh truths. They judge because they don’t understand and often come from a place of ignorance.

The best to fight against them is to maintain your positivity. Don’t let the negativity surrounding them dim your light. Let them live in their pessimism and judgment and hope that one day they open up to receive more.

Give Them Time And Space

One of the best ways to deal with closed-minded people is simply to give them time. Just because they’re not a place to take in what you’re telling them at that moment, doesn’t mean that they never will. The more you push, the more they are likely to resist. Instead, time and space could allow them to process what you’ve told them and actually take the time to weigh it against what they assumed to be their beliefs.

You’d be surprised how healing time can be when the close-minded person no longer feels a need for defense and doesn’t need to react accordingly. Once you have explained your feelings, thoughts, and beliefs, accept that there’s nothing more to do on your end.
