A Long Meaningful Life

Ada Keating is now a 98 year old woman, yet she hasn’t lost her character. She maintains a remarkable clear mind, along with still being healthy enough to walk on her own, retain her memory and engage in active conversation. However, she chose to live in a nursing home and it’s not because she can’t take care of herself…

Keep in mind that Ada wasn’t always this old and has lived a long and fulfilling life. Ada once worked as an auxiliary nurse at Mill Road Hospital where she got used to caring for others at all hours of the day before going home to nurture her own four children that she shared with her latest husband Harry.

A Son Who Lived His Own Long Life

Ada is a mother to four children but only one of them is a son, and the other three are all girls. Tom, the son, is the oldest of the four children. He worked as a painter and decorator at HE Simm building services before his retirement. However, when he started nearing his 80s his health deteriorated and he needed to be relocated to a care facility.

His mother wouldn’t let him go there alone and despite being able to take care of herself still, moved in with him. Her motherly instinct was flaring up and she knew that her son needed her help. She moved in too within a year of Tom’s relocation. She didn’t care that was now 98 and her son 80, she simply couldn’t quit being a mother to her only son at any age.

You Never Stop Being A Mom

Tom was overjoyed when he found out he wouldn’t be alone in the care facility: “They’re very good here and I’m happy to see my mum more now she lives here.” Ada didn’t move in so she could be pampered but rather because she knew that her son needs special attention. Every day she goes out of her way to make sure that he’s comfortable and up to a healthy standard.

She even makes it a point to stop by his room every night to say goodnight. She explains: “I say goodnight to Tom in his room every night and I’ll go and say good morning to him.”

A Split Of Needs

Tom and Ada are not only a mother and son duo but also best friends. The staff describes them as “inseparable,” which makes sense considering their history. Tom had never married so he had lived with his mother his whole life and now longs to always have her near him. They know how to keep themselves quite enterainmet together. Between episode of Emmerdale and board games, there is never a dull moment.

Due to her advanced age and independent personality, Ava also has her own needs. She sometimes needs to divide her attention between her own demands and her son’s. Some days she’ll leave Tom to go to the hairdresser while he keeps an eye out awaiting her return so he can extend his arms wide open and embrace her.

Never Too Old To Be Scolded

These two are a hilarious testament that you can never grow out of being a mother or a son. Despite being a grown 80-year old, Tom will still find himself in situations where he is being reprimanded by his mother: “She does a fantastic job of caring after me,” he explains, “She’ll sometimes say, ‘Behave yourself!’”

But Tom doesn’t mind. After spending 80 years in this kind of routine, he is used to it and even looks forward to it. It turns out that a mother’s love will benefit you at any age!

An Inspiration To Everyone Around Them

The manager of the care home, Philip Daniels, has told everyone interested in Tom and Aida’s story that everyone working around them is equally touched and happy to have them around: “It’s very touching to see the close relationship both Tom and Ada share and we are so pleased we were able to accommodate both of their needs,” he states.

Tom’s sisters, and Aida’s remaining children also frequently visit along with other members of the family making them all feel really at home. Even the next generation of grandkids is a witness to their strong bond. Ada’s granddaughter Debi Higham, said, “There’s no separating them!” “It gives us peace of mind knowing they’re both being cared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Time Is Of The Essence

Ada may be 98 years old but she hasn’t stopped living. She makes every day count not only for herself but for her 80-year old son and the pair lives each day to the fullest. The care facility’s manager explains: “It’s unusual to have moms and their children in the same care facility, and we want to make their time together as memorable as possible. They are inextricably linked.”
