It is easy to forget that as we get older, our elders also get older. The chaos of our daily lives – work, relationships, hobbies – often robs us of our passing time. Days turn into weeks, which turn into months, and in the midst of life, we forget to nurture some of our most precious connections: our family.

The younger generations get busy with their own lives and forget about the ones who raised them. Grandkids pick a night out with their friend over Sunday dinner and don’t realize what they’ve missed out on until it’s too late, and grandma and grandpa are gone. However, that’s not the case for this duo. When grandpa called in tears, his grandaughter knew how to honor his request.

The Healing Power of Love

When Elizabeth’s grandma passed away from Alzheimer’s, it was only natural that her senior counterpart was left without her to feel the pain of loss and grief. However, he wasn’t left to handle this heaviness alone. The gifts of company and care that he receives from Elizabeth, captured via her iPhone, are a great lesson of the healing power of companionship, friendship, and human connection.

Text conversations between the two show the great qualities of the bond, writing: “Hi Megan, it’s grandpa. I just wanted to say that I love you and you deserve so much love and happiness. Never forget that. Love, Grandpa,” and following the sweetness with laughs: “I also want great-grandchildren so hurry up before I die.”

Friendship in Family

Elizabeth has been sharing her grandpa’s healing journey online. In one of her latest videos, she posted a heartwarming screenshot that tugs on the heartstrings. In this text, he writes, “Would you like to come over and have a sleepover? I haven’t been feeling well and miss you.”

While the term “sleepover” is often used in the context of children’s playdates or teenage gossip parties, this duo has warmed hearts worldwide by showing how incorporating sleepovers regularly has helped the elder cope with feeling down and alone. Elizabeth sometimes leaves his house at 5:30 a.m. for work, and he still wakes up too just to wave goodbye.

Celebrating the Past

The loss of Elizabeth’s grandma has been felt by the whole family. To commemorate her memory the family honored her by celebrating her love and joy for the Christmas season. In replacement of a traditional funeral, they chose to plant a tree that they can decorate with Christmas lights every year when the time rolls around.

Elizabeth shared an image of a tattoo she got on her wrist – the symbol of a Christmas tree to celebrate her love for Terry. On the planted tree, the family writes notes to their loved one who has passed and hangs them in ornaments on the tree. In a post, Elizabeth shows the tradition she had with her grandpa of drawing stars on her tattoo for grandma every Christmas, with the caption reminding us to “Hug your loved ones.”

Laughter as Medicine

Amongst the heartache and sadness that comes along with healing, we are lucky that there is always the gift of laughter. Elizabeth’s grandpa’s humor and positivity in his old age are light in her life and an excellent example for his fans.

In a series of videos, Elizabeth reveals funny conversations between her and her grandpa with the caption, “Texting my 91-year-old grandpa be like …” One of the most amusing messages reads, “I sent you that article if you don’t find your soul mate by 29 you’ll die alone,” as if the thought of being single wasn’t bad enough!

Staying Positive

In between eating Panera for dinner with his notably “favourite” but only grandchild, journaling his thoughts, and maintaining a high spirit, Elizabeth’s grandfather can lead a happy and healthy lifestyle despite dealing with grief.

In one remark about picking up dinner, her grandpa jokes, “I have no teeth and can only eat soft things, ha!” Making light of our circumstances, accepting what is, and focusing on what we have instead of what we have lost can distinguish whether we choose to live a positive or negative day-to-day life. No matter how tough it gets, we can always find the light!
