One of the best things you can remember when you’re in a bad mood is that you have the power to change it.

You might have heard somewhere or been told by someone that the simple act of smiling, even when you’re upset, will make it easier to get rid of negative thoughts in lieu of positive ones. It can work!

If that doesn’t help you at all, give these five methods a try. They’ll have you forgetting your bad mood in no time.

Tapping

Did you know there are different points all over your body that respond to physical pressure differently?

They’re called acupressure points, and by tapping these various points you can help shift your negative energy toward a more positive one. Tapping has been seen to help reduce emotions of sadness, anger and anxiety.

If you’re interested in this method, research it a bit more; it takes less than 5 minutes to start feeling better.

Eat food (Healthy food)

I don’t know about you, but when I’m hungry, I’m kind of a terrible person to be around. Hunger is one feeling that can make us incredibly irritable and prone to angry outbursts.

However, be sure to eat something that is good for you. Comfort foods that are sweet and calorie dense can actually have the opposite effect.

Some good options include a tall glass of almond milk or any food that is high in magnesium.

Certain smells (Aromatherapy)

Research has found that scents such as orange and lavender can help reduce levels of anxiety while simultaneously boosting our mood.

One study discovered that, when orange and lavender ambient scents were placed in a dental office, patients experienced decreased feelings of anxiety and improved mood as they waited for their dental procedures.

This is when compared to other patients who either listened to music, or got neither music nor the orange and lavender scents.

Doing something outside

Researchers out of one UK university discovered that going for a walk outside in a ‘nature’ setting was just as effective as antidepressants and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment programs.

‘Green exercise,’ such as outings in the country or a park, are especially effective in abolishing bad moods.

Talk yourself up; use positive affirmations

One of the toughest things we ever have to do is silence that incredibly negative inner dialogue that is constantly churning in our heads. Recognize that we can fight this negative voice with a positive one.

Use phrases like:

  • I will succeed in my endeavors because I have succeeded before
  • I am a smart person who is fully capable of completing all of my work today
  • Today I will break down barriers and overcome obstacles
  • Any mistakes that I make today will help me succeed in the future

One of the best things you can remember when you’re in a bad mood is that you have the power to change it.
