5 Things Being Single Can Teach You

Let’s face it, society has a way of pressuring people into being in a relationship.

When you’re single, people feel sorry for you, don’t invite you places because they feel it will be awkward for you, or they think something is basically wrong with you.

It’s as if being single is the worst thing in the world. Well, it’s not. It can actually be a good thing.

Being single can teach you a lot about yourself and give you limitless freedom. Below are just 5 of the many things that being single can teach you.

1. The sky is the limit

This is that freedom I spoke of before. When you’re single you can do what you want, when you want, with whomever you want or just by yourself.

You can travel the world, go backpacking through the mountains, or have a spa day whenever you want to.

You can work long hours to get that promotion you’ve dreamed of without feeling guilty about neglecting a relationship. The are no limitations to the experiences you can have when you’re single.

2. You can be self-reliant

Being single gives you the benefit of making all of the decisions in your life. Whether it’s which movie to watch on Netflix or where in the world you would like to live, the decision is solely up to you.

I’ve been single for over 10 years and in that time I have learned to do simple electrical work, simple plumbing fixes and I’ve even installed laminate flooring by myself.

Being single has made me much more confident in my ability to take care of myself. It’s made me an overall stronger person. And, I am really proud of everything I’ve accomplished on my own.

3. Your friendships are just as fulfilling as a relationship

You know that your friends are very important to you. But, when you’re single, you tend to appreciate them even more than when you’re in a relationship.

You spend more time with them and you realize that their love, although different than romantic love, is still strong and fulfilling.

So, be sure to remember this when you’re no longer single and have to split your time between them and your partner.

4. You should never settle

Being single means being in charge of everything that you do. You don’t need to settle for takeout because your partner doesn’t feel like going out.

You don’t need to settle for that guy you’re not even remotely attracted to but your friends keep trying to set you up with.

You’re in charge of your life and you never have to choose to be less than happy.

5. You don’t need a relationship to feel fulfilled

When you’re single, you search for different outlets beyond a relationship to find happiness in your life.

Luckily, you’ll find that you don’t have to look too far.

Friendships, family, pets, hobbies, and your career can all be sources of satisfaction and you’ll realize that a life without a partner isn’t a life without love.

There will be days that you wish you were in a relationship and that’s OK.

Just keep in mind how wonderful single life can be and try your best to celebrate the strength and independence that comes with it.
