Breaking a generational habit, curse, or otherwise is a pretty astounding feat. Be it on purpose or by total accident, these facts about a family usually have great staying power and are considered part of that family's legacy, so it can be a bit strange when someone comes along and finally shakes things up.
This doesn't mean it's unwelcome, though. In fact, it's sometimes thought of as a miracle! Finally, after decades, something has changed!
That's exactly what happened to a Michigan woman and her husband recently, as their child broke a family trend that had lasted for over a century.
Andrew Clark had been dating his girlfriend Carolyn before she married into the Clark family. Before his proposal, however, Andrew warned Carolyn about a strange family fact that would likely impact them should they decide to start a family.
The Clark family line had not had a female child since 1885. Every baby born since has been a boy.
"I'm like, 'Oh, it's a 50-50 chance every time. What do you mean?'" Carolyn explained in an interview with Good Morning America. "He goes, 'No, legitimately, we have not had a girl in our direct line in over 100 years.'"
Though it's strange, it didn't turn Carolyn away at all, so the two still married with plans to have children someday.
The two already have a 4-year-old son named Cameron, but they began trying for a second child in 2021, this time with Carolyn hoping for a girl she told WZZM 13. Their first attempt resulted in a miscarriage, so they put a pause on the family planning for a while.
It wasn't until a year later that they tried again, cautious yet hopeful, and this time, Carolyn's pregnancy stuck.
"When we found out we were pregnant, we honestly didn't care if we were having a boy or girl at that point. We just were thankful to be pregnant and just praying for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby," she said.
The couple opted not to learn about the baby's sex right away, instead deciding to host a gender reveal party.
Their plan was to have cookies made that contained pink or blue icing inside them depending on the baby's gender, so everyone attending the party could all find out at the same time.
"We kept it a secret to ourselves as well. So I just assumed it was going to be blue in the center of the cookies and it'd be another boy in the lineage," Andrew said.
"We did a countdown," Carolyn said, "and we all took a bite."
To everyone's absolute shock, when they took the first bite of their cookies, the inside was pink. The Clarks would be having their first girl in the family since 1885.
"Everyone was just screaming and jumping in in disbelief, honestly."
Andrew especially was stunned. "I was shocked. I think I just stared at the center of that cookie like, it's really pink. So it was a good surprise for us."
The couple remained shocked throughout the entire pregnancy.
"I think every ultrasound [Carolyn] was like, 'double check that it's a girl. I don't believe in it,'" Andrew said. "It made it really hard to come up with names because we've never thought of girl ones before."
Nine months later, the baby girl was born. Audrey Marie Clark was born on St. Patrick's Day and is officially the 138-year curse-breaking baby of the Clark family line.
"We're so happy that she's finally here and once again, that she's healthy and that everything went well with the delivery," Carolyn said.
Mom Carolyn also had a bit of pride attached to this pregnancy, as not only was it her own child that broke this curse, but she had been hoping for a girl this time.
"I got my girl."
Baby Audrey already has quite the legacy going for her despite only having just been born, but thankfully it's not one that should put any undue pressure on her in the future. Instead, she'll be a star among her relatives and probably be spoiled to the moon and back, as she truly is something special.
Though it's not the sword-wielding, evil-defeating image we often conjure in our minds when thinking about breaking a curse, it's just as special and monumentous to the Clark family.
