Our self-confidence affects how we see ourselves, how we interact with others, and how we engage with the world around us.

Feeling like we can’t do something may keep us from trying, stop us from experiencing the best things in life, and even lead to depression.

So, you need to make sure you are creating habits that improve your confidence, not tear it down.

Here are seven confidence-killing behaviors that will keep you from living a better life, and how to avoid them.

1. Getting caught up in needless drama

We all know people who love to stir up drama for no apparent reason. Don’t buy in to it. Stay out of other people’s drama and don’t create your own.

Instead, spend each and every day with all your energy directed toward positive ideas and possibilities. Instead of being annoyed, be amused.

Instead of getting angry, become curious. Feel admiration instead of envy.

Count your blessings, value the people who matter, and turn your back on any drama you or other people try to create in your life.

2. Needing to always be right

Some people tend to take a position and then argue and totally disregard differing opinions or points of view.

They “know” they’re right (even when they’re wrong) and they want you to know it too. Their behavior isn’t a sign of confidence, but a sign of a bully.

Confident people take a stand not because they think they’re always right, but because they’re not afraid to be wrong.

They know that finding out what is right is a lot more important than being right.

When they’re wrong, they’re secure enough to graciously back down and appreciate the lesson they’ve learned from it.

3. Seeking approval from everyone

Confident people have no interest in pleasing everyone they meet. They know that not all people agree with them all the time.

You should never let the opinions of the masses define who you are or what you can or can’t do. Instead, focus on getting approval from the people who actually matter to you.

When you do that, then no matter what you do, you will do it with confidence, because you know the people who truly matter are behind you.

4. Allowing failure to stop you and letting success go to your head

Think about success and failure in a different way. If success makes you arrogant, then you haven’t succeeded. If failure makes you determined, you haven’t failed.

Don’t take everything that goes wrong personally, and don’t get a big head when everything goes right.

Create, enjoy, learn, love, experience, succeed, fail, persevere, make mistakes, make progress, and take risks. Do this, and every day will be remarkable.

5. Talking too much

Getting attention by talking constantly is just a mask for insecurity. Confident people are often quiet and thoughtful. They listen as much, if not more, than they speak.

They already know what they think, so they want to know what you think. Instead of being the one who talks all the time, ask people questions.

You know a lot, but not everything and the only way to learn more is to listen more.

6. Always saying, “Why me?”

Confident people don’t say, “Why me?” Instead, they say, “Why not me?”

Unfortunately, many people feel they have to wait to be hired, to be good enough, to be chosen, while confident people know that they can do anything they set their minds to do, especially in this day and age.

Through the internet, they can create their own products and services, build their own networks of clients and partners, and follow their dreams.

7. Hiding from new life experiences

Life is short. Put yourself out there and let life touch you. Yes, it will hurt sometimes. But, don’t let the fear of making a wrong decision prevent you from making any decision at all.

There are too many amazing places to go. Today is full of possibilities. So go out and find a new adventure! See where it takes you and cherish every moment.
