Guess Who Hates Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is a day of love and sharing love, but there’s a group of people who have no love to share around the holiday. These are people who have turned to the internet to voice their complaints and reflect exactly how many others are feeling on the inside. They have found a forum where they can find others who share their feelings and thoughts and engage in conversation to support one another.

We are talking about Redditors. According to data published by AT&T, a majority of Reddit users have negative opinions of Valentine’s Day. This makes for just over one-third of people on the popular social media platform.

What’s Wrong With A Day Dedicated To Romance?

Researchers at AT&T analyzed more than 1,000 posts about Valentine’s Day that were flooding threads in the r/AskReddit community felt about Valentine’s day. The researchers were trying to figure out not just what was being said but how the community felt about it.

The underlying sentiment turned out to lack positivity. in total, 50 percent of the comments were negative, meaning a majority of people posting in the thread really would prefer to live in a world that didn’t have to deal with Valentine’s day.

The Biggest Problem With Valentine’s Day

There are a lot of reasons why some people prefer to absolve themselves from the holiday. Some don’t want to feel pressured by its consumerist nature. Some just don’t like being shamed for being single. Some feel like it adds unnecessary pressure and expectations. But for Redditors, the biggest problem was that they didn’t have a partner on a day that emphasizes that relationship. They didn’t think this needed to even be a bad thing.

Surely some of them do feel lonely. In fact, the data showed that the word “lonely” appeared regularly throughout the thread and was associated with negative comments 83 percent of the time. This was followed up by the word “single,” which was used in a negative manner 55 percent of the time. For some, they were actually quite happy being alone, but the holiday made them feel like that wasn’t okay and that there was something wrong with being “single” that would make them feel like they should be “lonely.”

The Good Parts Have Nothing To Do With Love

Even the positive comments weren’t to defend the holiday or the name of love. The community stood strong that their lives should still be fulfilling whether or not they shared it with their partner. Their happiness seemed to come from within or from sources that didn’t depend on another person.

Instead one of the most common words to appear in the thread was “chocolate.” Redditors not only love the candy that comes with the holiday even if they have to buy it themselves, but they find it to taste even sweeter when it goes on sale the next day with one person commenting: “The real holiday is February 15 when all the candy goes on sale.”

A Holiday Or An Excuse To Buy?

So is consumption, whether of candy or jewelry the only benefit of the holiday. Some Redditors find that this is what the holiday has turned into. They find it to be a made-up excuse to encourage the masses to consume in big amounts. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating love but Redditors feel like that’s not even what the holiday is about anymore.

According to CNBC, the average American spends about $142 on Valentine’s Day. Consumers are expected to spend a total $21.8 billion on the holiday in total on a yearly basis. Maybe Redditors are unto to something.

Being Alone Vs Being Lonely

​There might be a connection between Redditor’s demographic and their views. The two most common age demographics of Reddit users are 18-24 and 25-29. The General Social Survey found that about 51 percent of people 18-34 don’t have a steady partner. This is an age of discovery, of growth, and is a turning point between young love and serious committed relationships, which often results in a breakup.

Still their cynicism isn’t just about being single. If the day is about love then everyone should be celebrated. Love is shared between family, friends, community, and other meaningful connections. Having a partner is not the source of ultimate happiness. Some people don’t have one and still never feel lonely because they are surrounded by genuine and pure love. f you’re single this Valentine’s day, just remember that doesn’t mean that you’re alone.
