If you look around you, you’ll notice that everyone is going with the flow while on the verge of a breakdown. We assume our roles every morning while dragging ourselves through chronic burnout. We’re all just trying to catch a break while trying to meet expectations. The reality is the standard set out in society today is unrealistic. We’re expected to do more than we can handle.

While men and women experience standards differently it is affecting them both. The only difference is that the male experience isn’t often publicized in society because discussing it is often seen as a weakness. So, men have taken to Reddit to vent instead and here’s what they had to say.

Everything, All At Once

“Being emotional but at the same time hard as a rock, being a provider and giving her a certain kind of lifestyle without being a complete workaholic, and while reading her mind” – ghost882

Historically, men were assumed to be the provider both financially, emotionally, and basically, women depended on them for survival. Women since have grown to find their own independence so how come the expectations of all the roles that men should fill haven’t adapted? Men struggle to balance the home and the work, and there are days when they can’t do both.

Making The First Move

“Lots of pressure on us to make the moves: we’re still (generally speaking) supposed to ask her out, go for that first kiss with confidence, and take the lead in the bedroom.”

It’s just as nerve-wracking for a man to make the first move. It requires a lot of vulnerability to face the risk of rejection.

“Dad Bods” But With Muscles

“Some women have pretty skewed perceptions when it comes to the male body, and how much work it takes to get there. They say stuff like ‘I prefer a natural-looking guy, I don’t like too many muscle'” which is fine but then when they show you what they consider ‘natural fit” to be and it’s still some guy with less than 10% body fat who hits the gym 6 days a week and has crazy diet discipline.” – amiuglyornotmate

At the of the day, attraction should be relative and men should feel happy in the body they have and only work towards the one they want. The same applies to women. Let’s just be grateful for our bodies and all they can do.

Holding In Feelings

“It is not socially acceptable for me to outwardly display emotions other than anger, and affection towards a woman.”- clearwind

Look at it this way, when boys and men are taught to hold in their feelings as to not show weakness and “man up,” what happens instead is that they repress them, then project them in unhealthy ways that end up hurting them and the ones they love. Men are just human beings with all kinds of emotions too. They should be able to break into tears without judgment.

Depending On A Man For Happiness

“I think women should quit expecting men to be the source of their happiness. Of course, you should want to be happy with your man, but don’t expect it to be his full-time job to make you happy. Everyone is responsible for their own happiness in life. If you’re not happy, then fix it yourself. Don’t just be miserable all the time because he’s not catering to your every emotion.

He has his own happiness to work on and when you put your happiness expectancy on his plate, then it overloads him. This is why most relationships fail these days.”- JD7684

It takes two whole people to make a soulmate connection, not one and a half. Otherwise, it creates an unequal power with unfair expectations that put a heavy burden on the one responsible for both their happiness and someone else’s.

Magic Number 6

“Earning six figures, six feet high and with a six-pack. Earning six figures is in all U.S states above the average. Having a six-pack… yeah well it at least takes a lot of work (apart from your job). if not even certain genes ” –Homely_Bonfire

All of these expectations require not only a lot of work and discipline but opportunities that not everyone has access to. Instead of expecting a man that has them all, it might be more beneficial to work as a team and figure out how you can achieve them together.
