When asked, people in palliative care, people who are near the end of their lives, are open about their lives. When faced with mortality, you grow the most as a person.

Everyone experiences a host of emotions when faced with the end, and everyone has a regret or two. Here are the five most common:

1. I wish I had been true to myself.

We’re faced with pressure all the time to conform to what society wants us to be, but how often has that stepped on who you want to be?

Honor yourself and be true to yourself. Don’t live the life others expect from you.

2. I wish I hadn’t worked so much.

Civilization is a way of life that has rewarded us with ease of living, but we have to work hard for it. People at the end of their lives often express the regret of working so much.

They worked their lives away. It’s important to have something to do, but we’re saddled with impressive debts and the demand for production.

Take some time to simplify your life. Create more space in your life and be open to opportunities that might fit your style a bit better.

3. I wish I had been brave in the face of my fears.

Fear often cripples us and keeps us from what we want to do and where we want to go. We’re often afraid to even express our feelings.

Many reach the end of their lives feeling they never had the courage to stand up to their fears and fully express themselves.

You can’t control how others act, and you can’t control the things you’re afraid of, but you can control your feelings and actions.

4. I wish I hadn’t neglected my friendships.

If you’ve ever had a friend fall out of touch with you, never to be heard from again, you probably know how this feels.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in your family and home life, and it’s hard to keep up with your friends if you move, but take the time to do it. You won’t regret knowing your friends into old age.

5. I wish that I had allowed myself to be happier.

It really is a choice, allowing yourself to be happy is. It’s your life. It’s your choice. So choose happiness.
