Proof That Birth Month Impacts Your Personality

If you're already the type of person who lends some credibility to beliefs such as astrology and the zodiac, the concept of the time of someone's birth holding influence over how they develop is nothing new.

However, for those who don't tend to believe what the stars have to say, that idea sounds preposterous. It's more than just spiritualists saying these things, though, as there are real studies that prove the season in which someone's born can predict both major personality traits and their primary emotional drive.

Given the website you're on or perhaps the page you came from to read this, I'm assuming you do. At least partially, anyway. Whether you do or don't is fine though, everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and I can understand why some people might find the concept of the alignment of the cosmos dictating large swaths of one's life might sound a little absurd.

But what if I told you that there was some truth to it? Not in a direct line to astrology, but the concept that the time you were born does leave you predisposed to certain personality traits?

A study presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology suggests that the season in which we're born can actually have an impact on our general mood, as well as our likelihood to develop some particular mental illnesses.

The study was conducted by Xenia Gonda, an associate professor at Semmelweis University in Budapest. She asked 366 students to fill out a questionnaire that would classify them into one of four temperaments, then drew correlations between the classifications and the students' birthdays.

She found pretty straightforward results that indicated that a person's birth season can have great influence over what emotional traits show prominence, including irritability, positivity, and depression.

So, what does your birth month say about you? What could the temperature outside when you were born possibly have to say about your feelings? Gonda's study reveals what emotions dominate your outlook on the world and how you compare to your peers from other seasons.

Spring Babies Score High In Hyperthymia

Those born in March, April, and May tick boxes on two opposite ends of the emotional spectrum.

Spring babies score high in what's known as hyperthymia. Hyperthymia, when at standard levels, denotes a generally high level of optimism, enthusiasm, and positivity. They're able to see the bright side of every situation and seek out silver linings. However, and perhaps ironically, they're also more susceptible to clinical depression. A 2012 study of 58,000 subjects with depression showed the highest rate was among people born in May. November was the birth month with the least amount of cases.

Summer Personalities Are Prone To Mood Swings

Up next is June, July, and August babies, who experience much the same benefits as their spring counterparts, though it appears to be less intense.

Unlike those born before them who occupy two ends of the spectrum at once, having a summertime birthday indicates a higher likelihood of rapid mood swings instead, alternating between both hyperthymic characteristics and crashing moods. Not so much so that any sort of clinical diagnosis should be immediately sought out based on birthday alone, but enough that it differentiates them from the other months of the year.

Autumn Brings Calm And Order

Autumn is when we see some calmness when compared to the emotional speed and intensity of the past two seasons. Those born in September, October, and November are less prone to both manic-like positivity and depression-adjacent lows, appearing relatively well-balanced in comparison.

However, there is one area in which they spark a little easier, and that's irritability. Fall babies tend to get agitated faster than their compatriots, though to what ends will truly depend on the individual.

Winter Birthdays Tend To Be Rough

Winter-born children have it rough, sorry to say. Those with birthdays in December, January, and February have higher levels of a number of mental illnesses such as depression, seasonal affective disorder, and bipolar disorder.

Don't worry though, it's not all concerns for winter babies. They're actually far less irritable than their fall neighbors, and a 2015 study revealed that winter birthdays correlate with high levels of creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills. A high percentage of celebrities are winter babies as well, meaning it's a good season for fame.

Which Is Best?

Should you actively try to aim for your child to be born in one season over another? If you're basing this decision off the traits present in this list alone, then no, probably not. Nothing in this world is a guarantee, and that includes traits that corelate with birth months. While there are common trends, theories, and coincidences, nothing is 100% absolute when it comes to birthday analysis.

This is meant to be more food for thought than it is a guide as to the best season to be born in. Each one comes with its ups and downs.

It's Also A Reminder About Health

After all, many of these seasonal correlations likely have something to do with the health of the person who was carrying the baby at that time.

Vitamin deficiencies, nutritional habits, serotonin levels affected by mental illnesses, and a million other things can affect a baby's development in the womb, and these can all be affected by the seasons. It's important to advocate for proper care for those carrying children, not only because it can impact the baby, but because their health matters just as much as the health of their child.

That's really what's best to keep in mind here. Whether it be astrology or psychology dictating traits, feelings, or otherwise, nothing can determine what you'll do with the hand you're dealt.

While it's fun being able to trace back certain aspects of yourself and figure out what on earth (or in space) caused you to think this way, the ultimate power of what to do with those aspects lies in your hands. We all have the power to use it positively, too, whether it be unyielding optimism or grounded skepticism. Learning how to use your skills for good is the ultimate way to make the most out of your place in life, and do your sign, birth month, or birth season proud!
