There are a lot of words you could use to describe a partner who seems to take more than they give, but I’ve always thought the term “vampire” was right on the money. Vampires are often portrayed as drinking the blood of their victims, but according to centuries old folklore, they sapped their victims of their “essence.”

In many ways, that’s exactly what an emotional vampire seeks to do. Emotional vampires are so prevalent that we sometimes begin to see their behavior as pretty standard and just tolerate it. We often don’t know who it is they are!

Here’s a reminder; 5 signs you’re dating an emotional vampire.

1. They fail to listen to you.

One of the more frustrating things about dating a vampire is they don’t listen to you. Often, they feign interest in order for a chance to talk themselves. When called on it, they often…

2. Play the victim.

3. They are drama queens.

Part of playing the part of the victim is being just so dramatic. If they don’t get their way, they tend to fly off the handles and throw a huge tantrum, making you feel guilty.

When you feel guilty, you’re more likely to give them the things that they want.

4. They’re narcissists.

Emotional vampires tend to be into themselves, and they want you to be into them too. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, but there’s a point where it’s just narcissism.

As a result, they often don’t take critiques well, then play the victim, then get dramatic, and then you feel guilty, and then…well you see where this is going.

5. They’re control freaks.

Emotional vampires are all about staying in control.

They decide where the next road trip takes you, they decide what’s for dinner, they decide how the house will be decorated – they decide on everything. It’s a clear sign of a vampire.
