It’s fascinating how much the body can give away before the mind has even processed it. Sometimes the physical body is one step ahead of us. It’s why we feel angry before we realize we haven’t eaten all day, or feel tired before processing stress. Usually, the body is quite in tune with both the conscious and subconscious mind.

This is usually beneficial for us, as it can alert us to things that we’re not consciously aware of in the moment. However, the physical body can also betray us and give us away when we’re lying. Here’s what to look for when deciding if a person is lying, or if they can be trusted.

Avoiding Eye Contact

Look directly in their eyes and see if they meet yours. Strong eye contact is a sign of confidence. If they’re being truthful with you then they’ll feel confident about what they’re saying. However, if they’re lying, the stress of doing it will likely cause their eyes to shift. They may worry that they’re giving themselves away through their eyes and try to look away as much as possible. However, in their effort to not appear suspicious, they actually ironically show that they’re not being truthful.

However, be careful as some people have a hard time keeping eye contact in general if they struggle with self-esteem and assertiveness. Take their usual tendencies into account, and look for whether they match or not.

Using Their Phone As A Distraction

A person who is being dishonest will look for anything that shifts the attention away from them. When they can’t escape your focus, they’ll find something else to do themselves so that they’re not giving you their full attention. This is especially true for those with a fear of confrontation. They’ll try to look too busy to answer your questions. This also gives them extra time to come up with a lie if they need to do it on the spot.

They may also be using their phone to hide information and become obsessed with keeping it away from your reach in fear of you finding out something you shouldn’t.

Crossed Legs Or Arms

The body naturally speaks for itself. When we cross our arms and legs we do it in an attempt to hide and protect ourselves. It’s almost like the less of us a person can see physically, the less they know. This body language is also a sign of discomfort and defense, it’s meant to be disinviting and discourage open and honest interactions.

As nonverbal conversations make for 55% of our interactions, such subtle signs can be used as a form of manipulation. If you see a person with closed-off body language, you’re less likely to want to talk to them and pry out information.

Excessive Use of Hands And Gestures

Excessive use of gestures and hands during a conversation is another form of distraction. It’s meant to draw your attention away from what is being said and to the physical movement of the hands. That way the hope is you won’t notice when the gestures don’t align with the words being said.

Usually, this is a sign of the liar’s nerves. Their frantic movement may be itself overwhelming and gaslight into feeling confused and doubting your own recollections and interpretations. You’re likely to walk away from those conversations having no idea what actually was said.

Change In Voice Pitch Or Cracking

Pay attention to voice changes during conversations because they can be quite revealing. If you notice their voice getting higher in pitch as they keep talking, they’re likely not being honest. This is a sign of nerves and deception. It may even cause their voice to crack as their mouth gets drier and their hands get sweatier.

When paying attention to speech to detect honesty, also look for pauses and repetitions. A person who is lying will pause a lot to try and get their story together and think of the next thing to say. They may also try to repeat certain parts of their story in an attempt to prove it and even to believe it themselves.

Talking About Honesty

If they were truly being honest, they wouldn’t need to prove it and literally say that they are. Making statements like “I want to be honest with you” or “honestly” show that they’re trying a little too hard to convince you. If what they say is actually honest then it will simply speak for itself.

This is sometimes accompanied by big displays of emotion. Be careful if they get overly upset, angry, or sad as this will simply be an attempt of projecting their guilt. They may be wanting you to feel bad for them rather than owning up to their own mistakes as a deflection.

They Look Towards The Door

When a person is lying, they simply can’t wait to get out of that situation. They start looking forward to walking out the door and getting away with their lie so badly, that they’ll subconsciously start looking towards.

They may even direct themselves towards it with their feet or by facing it. They’re masking the fact that they actually want to leave the whole conversation before getting caught in their dishonesty.
