There are moments in every relationship that define it. These moments will either bring you closer together or pull you apart.

It will be during these times that you will think to yourself, “I can’t wait to grow old with this person,” or “Looks like I need to download Tinder again.”

Here are 5 things that can make or break your relationship.

1. Intimacy

Intimacy isn’t all about love making. Intimate touching like kissing, hugging, cuddling, caressing and massaging is important, too.

Touch is very important in strengthening romantic relationships. Physical affection is associated with overall relationship and partner satisfaction.

2. Communication

Talking to your partner about anything and everything under the sun enhances the relationship. The closeness in the relationship increases when you share your life experiences with one another.

The ability to talk to one another about thoughts, feelings, needs and wants is incredibly important to a relationship.

For a relationship to grow, problems need to be said. If communication is restricted, your relationship will face major problems down the road.

3. Listening

The ability to listen to your partner is just as important, or more so, than communication.

Listening to another person sends the message that you care and that you are truly interested in the other person’s ideas.

When you fail to listen to your partner, you may communicate the message that he or she doesn’t count, that you are the one with all the knowledge, and that you lack respect for your partner.

4. Working Together

In a business, if members don’t work together the business may fail. The same is true for relationships.

The ability to work together means recognizing each person’s strengths, but at the same time recognizing each person’s weaknesses and learning to turn weaknesses into assets.

Two heads are better than one. If couples follow this rule, they will see that the deep potholes that lie ahead may be nothing more than a little bump in the road.

5. Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is essential in maintaining healthy relationships. No one wants to be treated with disrespect. Your partner’s wishes and feelings have value. Let your partner know you are making an effort to keep their ideas in mind.

Never use hurtful language when talking to your partner. If this does happen, recognize the mistake, apologize, and resolve to use respectful language in the future.
