You feel like the love is no longer there, the passion has faded, and the increasingly toxic relationship is leaving you drained…are we talking about your job or relationship? The answer could be both but that still leaves the question: which is worse?

No one takes a job or goes into a relationship expecting it to ruin their lives yet many end up there anyway. It comes to a point where they have to evaluate whether it’s worth pushing through and trying anyway or whether the toll that each one is taking is too much too handle. We’ve assessed the factors that could help someone make that decision below.

Both Are Draining, But Only One Is Essential

The way that society is built, you need some sort of job to survive. It pays the bills, the more it pays it creates comfort and allows you to afford a lifestyle that brings you happiness. When a job becomes draining, the paycheque at the end of it can sometimes feel worth it.

A relationship on the other hand is a bonus. It can add to your life, give you a partner to share experiences with and it can feel fulfilling to love and be loved. However, you can survive and even still be happy without it. When you’re in a bad relationship, there’s no reward at the end. No one is paying if you push through. It leaves you drained and that’s it.

A Job Has A Time Limit, Relationships Are Forever

They say that the average person changes careers at least three times in their lifetime. No one expects you to stay in the same role forever. You’re encouraged to try new things, acquire new skills, and move up the ladder. You often move from one job to a better job. You don’t feel pressure going into a job thinking you’re stuck with it forever.

On the other hand, no one gets into a relationship hoping that one day they’ll break up. The intent when chosing a partner is chosing them forever. The best relationships are the ones where you grow old together and still love each other just the same. This means that when you’re in a bad relationship, if nothing changes it’ll just stay bad forever.

You Can Quit Both At Any Point, In Search For Another

Here’s the thing to consider when choosing which is worse, you never should feel “stuck” in either or because in reality, you can leave at any point. Yet, it’s usually not that simple. When you leave a job as long as you have another one lined up you’ll financially be fine. All you need is to write a letter of resignation, pack up your desk and go.

But with relationships, it’s never that easy. First off you can’t just have another one lined up and usually your lives are intertwined, and you need to pack up a lot more than just your desk. If you mix in shared kids and assets, the whole thing is a mess.

A Bad Relationship Follows You Home

You technically can leave work at work when you go home. Maybe you’ll still carry the stress of it but you don’t need to work on it past a certain number of hours. A relationship, however, goes everywhere with you. If you’re in an argument, your phone will blow up with texts, the issues will constantly be on your mind and you might even need to miss work in order to deal with home.

A bad relationship is there when you just need to relax, on a Sunday morning when you were hoping to sleep in, and you can’t exactly make requests for time off from it.

Both Are Toxic To Self Esteem

Both toxic job environments and relationships will destroy you from the inside out. You’ll keep wondering why you’re not good enough to make them work until you truly start believing that it’s all your fault. You’ll internalize guilt simply because you keep getting blamed. You won’t know how to see the light at the end of the tunnel because you’ll end up gaslighting yourself that this is just how things are. You’ll stand up for yourself less and less, and you’ll love yourself less and less.

We say, both are equally destructive and you should release any and everything that does not serve you. After all you only get one life and as you read this sentence, more time is running out.

Sometimes It’s One That Causes The Other

Take it from someone who has been there: ”I remember I had my first job and the first girlfriend around the same time and I went through a very bad patch through both of them.

She stayed in my life but the job didn’t. I have chosen a different career path since then and look forward to changing myself to be a better man to her.” – Siddhant Kashyap / Quora

We don’t realize the impact of staying in one or the other. We might think that we’re persevering but in reality, any kind of negative environment is bound to start dwindling down into all other aspects of life. If you’re in a bad job, it’s likely to impact your relationship, just like the reverse is also true.
