Fears Vs. Phobias And How To Get Rid Of Both

Fear is a natural, normal part of everyday life. We feel fear regularly on a small scale, being startled by a noise outside or that moment of panic when we drop something, but standard fear can develop into something a lot trickier when it becomes fixated on a certain object or situation.

That's when phobias come up, born from fears and traumas, growing until they become something big, something irrational, and something debilitating. They don't have to stay that way though, as there are ways to rid yourself of even your worst phobias.

Everybody has something they're scared of. Whether it be a common fear like that of heights or snakes, or something a little more unique like the fear of beards (pogonophobia) or the fear of mirrors (spectrophobia). Some might even be a little more conceptual, a little esoteric, like the fear of large things underwater (megalohydrothalassophobia).

No matter how common or uncommon your fear is, it's never a fun thing to have to face. Ask yourself this, though: is your fear just a fear, or is it a real phobia?

The distinction between a fear and a phobia is important when it comes to dealing with them. Fears are natural, even if what you're afraid of feels silly or impossible. Fear is a feeling that everyone faces, and everyone has things that they fear. Even those who claim they're not scared of anything have fears, be it a horrific car accident or being chased by a horror movie villain.

Phobias, on the other hand, are much more intense. They don't follow any rules of rationality, the fear felt when facing them is wild and uncontrollable, excessive to the point of panic.

While fears are often related to things that do have the potential to be dangerous (think heights, snakes, flying, or spiders), phobias are often felt towards things or situations that don't actually propose that great a danger. This doesn't help the person with the phobia, though, as they're irrational by nature.

Phobias can be caused by traumatic events, namely in one's youth, but others seem completely inexplicable. No matter the origin, there are ways you can overcome both phobias and fears, and it all starts with you.
